Marty Jurek

Independent songwriter and composer Marty Jurek’s latest project, Leaves of Autumn, is an enigmatic album built of many layers. Equal parts retro sensibilities with rock and roll, country, and Motown influences, as well as classical attention to composition, Leaves of Autumn brings a twist to songwriting tradition.
Alongside the vinyl only, unreleased, unexpurgated partner album Autumn, Leaves of Autumn uses the metaphor of seasonal change to evoke the cycles within human life and love, including themes on a greater level of regeneration and loss while following the individual narrative contained within. Part story-set-to-music, part concept album, Leaves of Autumn takes precision musical theory and classical composition techniques to build levels emotion through lyrics while remaining hooky and melodic throughout. The album includes distorted guitar, fingerpicking, brass, and one of Marty’s own string arrangements, all arranged to serve the crafted melodies and vocal lines. Offering a smorgasbord of sounds and instruments, Marty looks backwards to look forward by building past influences into a phenomenon greater than the sum of their parts.
The album’s creation process amps up it’s uniqueness, as Marty and his producer, collaborators, and other musicians involved in the project have never actually met in real life. After building on his old demos, Marty recreated them into a something multifaceted and bittersweet. Working remotely, he seized the potential of the internet to innovate outside of the practices inherited from the real-world music business. This novel approach helped Marty and other musicians get around the constraints of time and space, and the resulting album is clever and self contained. Hinting at the new business practices and possibilities out there in the cyber-age future, Marty has built up a network of like minded musicians who click. Building on his real life experiences studying composition, playing drums in garage bands, learning classical vocal technique, and experimenting with the status quo, Marty builds a bridge between the online world and a real creative outcome.
From melodic ending track Something Out There to the 70s style, descending guitar riff of You’ll Never Know, Leaves of Autumn is smart, sharp, and theatrical enough to cut through the 21^st century music scene while avoiding a simple rehash of that which has gone before.
