hooyoosay's new single "My obsession" blends vintage pop-rock

hooyoosay's new single "My obsession" blends vintage pop-rock with a contemporary dance-feel
Mainstream indie-dance-pop seventies-rock with a post-punk twist: hooyoosay's new single "My obsession" cannot easily be labeled with a simple one-word tag.

Their rendition of the song brings a fresh and innovative, catchy and intriguing approach to a rather obscure 1967 Rolling Stones track.

Contrary to the coarse and roaring Rolling Stones signature original, hooyoosay's whispery and sensual lead vocal interprets the song lyrics in such a way that a slightly humorous but definitely light-hearted undertone is added.

The overall sound is reminiscent of late seventies rock, a good dose of Ian Dury-like characteristics being injected.

At the same time the steadily pounding drum beats give the track enough of a contemporary dance-feel to possibly also appeal to listeners of Rihanna, Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and the likes.
Still the whole package breathes a gentle softness, clearing it from the fatiguing impact that some stellar productions occasionally might impose.

For the so-called b-side, hooyoosay chose to record Allen Toussaint's "Pain in my heart" in a modest arrangement, as an intimate, melancholic, acoustic jazzy blues ballad.
A video for both songs can be watched on YouTube

where the single can be streamed and downloaded, and where many more recordings, artwork and videos by hooyoosay can be found.

If you'd have missed to notice their full album "In dekay" before, this new single, combining the verve of "My obsession" and the gloominess of "Pain in my heart", makes for a compelling introduction to hooyoosay.

hooyoosay is a studio recording project with loose and anonymous (hence the name hooyoosay) contributors for electric guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, organ, harmonica, vocals, electric bass, drums, percussion.

In July 2011 hooyoosay released the album "In dekay", containing 22 tracks of guitar pop, classic rock, blues, rhythm and blues, acoustic pop, chanson pop, vintage pop and rock and roll remakes (WM 3661585974420).
By June 2012 hooyoosay released the single "My obsession".

hooyoosay perform mainstream-to-indie-pop-rock and prefer music that is played by live musicians on real instruments, rather than music that is programmed on a computer and then played by samples and electronic sounds.

Speak out against persecution of punk protestors

Amnesty International
Speak out against persecution of punk protestors
Dear KDTN Radio One,

On August 17 three members of Pussy Riot, a feminist punk band who wear colorful masks to protect their anonymity, were sentenced to two years in jail for performing a protest song in Moscow's main Orthodox cathedral.

The sentence was a major blow to free speech activists in Russia and around the world. But the global movement to help Pussy Riot has just begun. Be a part of it. Help us send a truckload of colorful masks to President Putin in protest.

The persecution of the three punk protestors is just one example of Putin’s efforts to clamp down on freedom of expression. Over the weekend, Pussy Riot reported that two other members fled Russia for protection. But the international attention generated by the Pussy Riot trial is galvanizing the free speech movement and sending Putin a clear message: The world is watching.

Tell President Putin that you’re watching too. Donate $20 or more to send a mask. Our goal is to bring 1,000 of these colorful masks, called balaclavas, outside the UN General Assembly in September which high-ranking Russian officials will attend. So far, we have 600. Will you help us reach our goal?

Amnesty International is working with partners including seminal punk rock club CBGB, musicians like Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and others to demand the release of Pussy Riot.

We can win this fight. Please help us send a strong message to President Putin – we will not let Pussy Riot be silenced!

In Solidarity,

Michelle Ringuette

Paul Maloney
As if we didn't already have a full plate for next Tuesday's RAIN Summit!
You probably remember recent news of radio and webcasting royalty reform (with at least two bills in Congress) which you can read about here and here and here. Naturally, our panelists will also have something to say about the streaming concerns of radio at the local level (more on that here and here
We'll also be announcing the winners of the 2012 RAIN Internet Radio Awards (here are this year's finalists -- you should listen to them!). Plus, there's the keynote address (more here) from Clear Channel Media and Entertainment President of National Sales, Marketing & PartnershipsTim Castelli (left), and RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson's "State of the Industry" address.
Then, as if this weren't enough, news of Apple's rumored entry into Internet radio broke last week (here).
Needless to say, there'll be lots to talk about! You should be part of this conversation! (There are a precious few seats left -- if you haven't yet, please secure your registration today here).
We'd also like to fill you in on the most recently added panel speakers for the Summit.
Raditaz is a free-to-use webcast service where users can create stations, listen to custom-curated stations, and use "tagging" to personalize their stations. Raditaz founder and CEO Tom Brophy will join us for the "Social Radio" panel song to discuss  song sharing, recommendations, listening rooms, and other social tools.
TuneIn, the stream aggregator and tuning software provider that serves as a "guide" to streams from thousands of broadcasters and webcasters worldwide is sending Senior Manager/Programming Scott Fleischerto the Summit, to speak about artist programmed channels, live acoustic shows, interactive news channels and more on the "Innovating Online Content" panel.
Joining Scott on the panel will beLive365 GM Johnie Floater. Live365 is the Internet radio network where members can create their own online radio station or listen to other Live365 broadcasters' online stations.

General Motors today announced it will work with both Livio and TuneIn for in-dash Internet radio functionality for 2013 Chevrolet Sparks equipped with MyLink Radio.
Livio's "Livio Connect" technology, used here in the company's first OEM integration with GM, will connect the TuneIn music smartphone app with the MyLink Radio. Livio Connect is a middleware framework protocol that enables hardware devices and mobile apps to connect to and interact with one another.
A press release says all of the TuneIn buttons and controls from the mobile device will be available on MyLink’s seven-inch touch screen, while the app on the phone itself will be disabled to help promote safer driving.

Stitcher Radio has added an "offline mode" to its iPhone and iPad mobile apps.
Stitcher is the on-demand internet radio service focused on news and talk radio and podcasts.
The update allows a listener to download over 10,000 radio shows and listen when there's no available data connection. There's apparently also a new comments system and improvements to Facebook sharing, searching, and AirPlay compatibility.

Nashville's political voiceover actors: What are they hiding?

Aug 03, 2012 at 7:38 AM | RadioDanny  in Industry

A couple surprising nuggets about the inescapable political ads set to dominate airwaves through the November elections:

1. There are people that actually wish the ads played year round. I'm talking about Nashville voice actors that can rake in $100,000 in a few months.
2. There are things those voice actors won't say.

As the amount of money spent on election campaigns skyrockets, having a golden voice that voters trust has become more lucrative. Just ask Byron Warner, a Nashville voice actor who can be heard in political ads across the country.

Warner said he shies away from mudslinging.  "Generally they hire a girl to nail the (opponent). Then I'll come in and extol the virtues of the candidate in a gentler tone," Warner said.  Warner, who charges between $350 and $1,000 per hour, expects to pull in six figures in political work this campaign cycle. He's already done a handful of spots, but August is when things really crank up. "In September it should be just about tolerable, and October will be insane. Just nuts," he said.

Allegiances are common among voice actors. Warner only works with Democrats. "It has nothing to do with how I vote. It has a lot to do with client loyalty," said Warner, adding that voice actors fear being blacklisted by one party if they work with the opposition.

On the other side of the aisle is Nashville voice actor Travis Turk (a video reel of his work is available to the right). After years of being a hired gun who would say "almost anything" for a price, last year Turk drew some lines in the sand for personal reasons. Now he only voices spots for conservative Republicans or independents, and he doesn't do attack ads. The stance has cost him 50 percent of his business.  "I've lost clients, but it's worth it," Turk said.  The flood of money pouring into campaign advertising has made the field more competitive, Turk said.  "There are many more people out there doing voice work than there have been in the past five or so years," Turk said. "I've seen the amount of people doing voice work increase by a factor of five times."

Warner is more than just a voice. The dual-threat does work in front of the camera, as well. While he won't do spots for some candidates with whom he disagrees on abortion, he's got no qualms putting on a lab coat or pretending to be a Colorado hunter or a truck-driving farmer concerned about Denver special interest groups. And he does it all without leaving Middle Tennessee.
"You can go to Colorado in 30 minutes by going to Ashland City and pretending it's Colorado," Warner said. "Tennessee is really good because it has all sorts of terrain."

Nationwide Taps Julia Roberts For Voiceover

Jul 24, 2012 at 6:35 AM | RadioDanny  in Industry

Nationwide Insurance is launching an integrated national marketing campaign July 27 featuring the voice of actress Julia Roberts.

TV breaks July 27 during NBC’s broadcast of the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Summer Olympics. The tagline is “Join the Nation.”

While past Nationwide Insurance campaigns have leveraged on-screen celebrity talent, this campaign is the brand’s first use of A-list celebrity talent in a voiceover capacity, said Jennifer Hanley, senior vice president of brand marketing for Columbus, Ohio-based Nationwide Insurance.

“For this campaign, when we were considering how best to deliver our message, we were looking for a familiar voice that would bring our brand character to life,” Hanley tells Marketing Daily. "Julia’s voice brings an authentic, inspired tone to the campaign that resonates well with our target audience.”

The Olympics are predicted to be one of the Top 10 television events of the year, making it an efficient, high-profile buy and a smart advertising investment, Hanley says.

“Nationwide believes the summer Olympics provides the perfect blend of strong audience reach and high engagement programming needed to launch the Join the Nation campaign,” she says.

Developed in partnership with Durham, North Carolina.-based ad agency McKinney, the effort includes TV, radio, digital and print advertising. The creative highlights Nationwide’s mutual structure -- which has allowed the company to put members first, not shareholders, since it was founded in 1926.

“Anthem,” a 30- and 60-second spot, celebrates the lives of Nationwide members and all that being part of this special member community has to offer. The second ad, “Disappear,” focuses on Nationwide’s Vanishing Deductible product, an option for members that rewards them for safe driving. It will begin running in August.

“We plan to create additional ads that focus on our brand, as well as our product offerings,” Hanley says. “The launch ads will run in varied rotation throughout summer until new messages are rotated in.”

The campaign also includes a dedicated campaign Web site, www.jointhenation.com, which will provide ongoing, protection-oriented content that encourages participation from members and other key audiences.

Nationwide employees will help kick off the campaign during the weekend of July 27-29 at the NASCAR Nationwide Series Indy 250 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Web.com Tour’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational golf tournament in Columbus.
